This is the first step in starting treatment and is used to receive a treatment recommendation and/or to start the process of individual counseling.
It's a holistic assessment that looks at different levels of influence, including medical concerns, mental health concerns, trauma, family, culture, relationship difficulties, substance use concerns, education, work, personal interests, strengths, and goals to better identify an individual's needs and effectively diagnose/provide treatment recommendations. This includes a thorough substance use assessment based on American Society of Addiction Medicine criteria.
During this appointment, new clients will complete intake administrative documents (e.g., informed consent, ROIs, financial agreement), testing instruments (Adult SASSI-4, PHQ-9, GAD, PCL-5, ACEs, CIWA, or CIWO if indicated), and a bio-psycho-social assessment.
Clients for which ASAM Level 1 outpatient counseling is indicated may elect to continue services with Lowcountry Recovery Counseling. Clients who request or meet criteria for alternative resources and/or higher levels of care will be provided referral options.

Lowcountry Recovery Counseling is an ASAM Level 1 private counseling practice offering assessment and treatment of primary substance use disorder and/or co-occurring mental health concerns.
Clients will engage in treatment planning and goal setting in their first individual session following their assessment.
ASAM Level 1 initial recommendations will begin with 6-10 individual sessions, depending on your individual needs, with ongoing assessments to monitor for effectiveness and assessment upon completion of initial recommendation to determine continuation of individual therapy and/or provision of aftercare recommendation(s).
As clients progress through treatment, recommendations are tailored to you based on progress as guided by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria. All client recommendations and individual therapy sessions are person centered and tailored to you.
Lowcountry Recovery Counseling utilizes point-of-care drug screens and breathalyzers as a measure of compliance and effectiveness.
Typical therapeutic interventions in this treatment modality consist of person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness, relapse prevention therapy, and trauma responsive therapy.
